From the way you walk, talk and dress you should always hold yourself to the highest standards. It’s very easy to let your guard down at work especially after you get comfortable. Don’t get comfortable being comfortable — always be cognitive of how you conduct yourself and ask your- self one question: How would I conduct myself if the CEO was around?
Maintain a Clean Job Record
Arrive early, do fantastic work and maintain above average attendance. Good luck getting ahead in your organization if you score subpar in these categories. Usually when someone gets fired or laid off, it’s for too many absences, missed deadlines, too many unsatisfied customers or gross negligence. Keeping a clean record will serve you well throughout your career and provide great opportunities for advancement.

Too many people are way too sensitive and emotional at their job. Hey, I understand we all have feelings, but we have to be careful not to present ourselves as emotionally unstable. The more you show control of your emotions and handle difficult situations well, the more you will be looked upon as a leader. Keep this in mind, especially when you’re feeling criticized.
Be in the Relentless Pursuit of Excellence
Whether you work for minimum wage or have a high-paying job, do your job and do it with excellence. Moving up in a company is based on com- petency, leadership, loyalty and consistent superior performance. If you struggle with understanding the dynamics of your job responsibilities, find out as much as possible how to be superb in your role. Take it one step further by learning what the next person ahead of you does and know it better than them. This will set you up for success because when the opportunity presents itself, you will be more than prepared to take on the role.
Be a Problem-Solver not a Problem-Maker
No one likes a complainer, so it’s in your best interest to stop whin- ing about what is wrong and start shouting about what is right. Having a positive attitude goes a long way in any environment, especially at work. Every job situation has problems but don’t exacerbate them by com- plaining. Whenever you go to your superior with an issue, always bring a potential solution. If you do this every time, you will become associated with being a solution-maker not a trouble-maker. Building a reputation as someone who is always trying to find the good in every situation will definitely put you way above your peers and provide opportunities that may not have presented themselves if you had a negative attitude.
